Plants vs Zombies

Plants and Zombies was released during 2009 by Pop Cap, the same developers that brings you those crazy and addictive game like Zume and Bejeweled 2. The goal of this game is simple, keep the undead from reaching your home and you!

Plants vs Zombies is a simple tower defense game that is fun and easy to play. I remembered playing this game a year ago and it still back then good then and it’s still good today.

On the main screen the game presents you with four types of gameplay mode (and 1 hidden mode). Adventure which is comprise of 6 levels, Mini-Games, Puzzle mode, Survival mode and Zen Garden mode (for those who have green thumb). All the other modes will be locked till you progress in the Adventure mode.

The game starts you off with garden lawn, from there you have at least a few seconds to build your defense before the local undead hordes starts invading your garden.

The bar on the bottom right hand side of the screen will indicate the zombie’s progress and from there you will need to prepare your defenses to defend your home and your brain from the undead. You won’t be doing this alone as you have your plants to fight for you. From the cheerful energy generated sunflowers to the tiny spore spitting mushroom, all these loyal plants will be fighting by your side to help you save your home or be eaten in the process, gulp!

Impressive new type of plants and zombies will be unlocked as you progress through the game. Rewards will then be presented as the last zombie is eliminated in every stage to provide you with an added advantage or use on the next level ahead.

The game also have a day and night mode and depend on the time of day, certain plants will not be available (mushrooms will only be available during night battle). While during the day, normal peas will be your standard defense unit and during the night, mushroom will take over from there.

From time to time, you friendly yet freakishly weird neighbor will pay you a visit after every few levels. Providing you with helpful tips, having a nice friendly game (mini-game) too selling you useful items to combat the hordes of undead or for your Zen garden.

Weird as your neighbor is, I find him rather entertaining as he actually give some funny jokes while providing you tips to battle the undead.

Once you have finished with the Adventure mode, this game will still keep you busy with the Mini-Games, Survival Mode and also puzzle mode (which will allow you to play as the zombie for once). All the mini-games comprise at least 18 to 20 games options, which should keep one busy for some time.

The graphic on this game is done quite well. Plant animation to zombie’s movement is all very fluent and full of animations. Especially when the zombies get their head blown off, which is very satisfying. Things are done in very cartoon like and are meant for all ages (Not to scared the little one of course). But for most time, you will actually be too busy to keep up your defenses to notice the art style of the animators.

Even when the game is very low in resolutions, it won’t really bother anyone much as the game can be switch from window mode to full screen mode.

From the sound of groan and moan from the undead to the cute little noise made when the little mushroom spurt out their spores, Plants vs Zombies has one of the best sound I heard so far for games like this. However the music is a bit repetitive, but nothing can annoy me when I am playing the game.

Can’t say much for the control as this is neither a FPS nor a driving simulator. Just point and click on the sun and also place your plant unit on the map. Anyone familiar with the mouse should be able to master this game in no time.

Although this is an old game, but it is still fun nevertheless. This is the sort of game that never get’s old no matter when you play it.

So no matter day or night, zombies doesn’t sleep and you need to think of a way to push them back no matter the cost, its either your brains or the undead zombies, so fight hard and think wisely when you still have your brain to think. Well done to Pop Caps for making such a fun and addictive game. I will be looking forward to their future games in 2010.

I personally give this game a rating of 4.5 out of 5.
