Ultimate Flash Sonic

Sonic is a name familiar to many as the world fastest Hedgehog has now made his way to Facebook! Sonic on Facebook is known as Ultimate Flash Sonic. This blue rodent has been appearing on many platforms since its time on the Sega Genesis. Today we review the world most famous rodent and the mascot of SEGA itself and see how it holds up to his name in Flash. Note, this is not an Official game from SEGA or TEAM SONIC, this is a free flash version made by Sonic Fan.

Gameplay

Sonic as the name describe is all about speed and in Sonic on Facebook is actually a port from one of the older Gameboy Advance game, Sonic Advance 2. The game comes in a few challenge mode, the main story and sub-game. However unlike the gameboy version, Sonic on Facebook is a flash game port.

We look at the main game, once click on play, the game will allow players to choose either to play as Sonic or any of his 3 friends. His friends list include the cute and wise Tails, the hotheaded Knuckles the Echidna and the new addition to the family, Cream the Rabbit along with her little Chao friend name Cheese (I know, cheesy names). All the characters plays like one another except that each of them has them has a special ability except for Sonic and Knuckles (Facebook and Flash version has taken away Sonic’s double dash feature and Knuckles rock and gliding capabilities). If player choose to play as Tails or Cream, they will have a capability to fly at a short moment (You will still have to come down when they get tired).

The gameplay is also similar to what you find in the gameboy advance version. Each stage starts in a zone by itself and each zones consist of 3 level which the 3rd level is usually the boss level where your character will fight the evil doctor robotnik (Dr. Eggman in Japan). Unlike the SEGA Genesis and the PC version of Sonic games, Sonic Flash levels is a lot smaller, due to the limitation of Flash. So players will feel that the game ends real fast and the level is very compact.

Speed is the key to this game. No matter which character you choose during the beginning of the game, players can be ensure that Sonic and his friends can really RUN! At times it is so fast that you can hardly judge what is coming in front of you. This is where the game famous SUDDEN DEATH comes in. Due to the speed of your character running or rolling, hitting on a spike at times will cause your character to temporary lose all their power rings. Yes, this happened quite a lot in this game and players need to remember where the spikes and also monster is locate else they will lose their chance to gain special bonus. However, the game is very merciful. Hardly one can die in this game as long as you do not run out of power rings. Even with only 1 power rings can keep a player alive till the end of the level. Unless you’re really a pro then you will get out of this game without a single scratch.

There are a few technical limitations to the Flash version of Sonic. Cream’s little Chao companion Cheese now will just fly around her and won’t do any attack. In the gameboy advance version, Cream’s companion can actually attack any nearby target without hesitation making Cream an ideal character for any beginners. Now due to this, Cream play almost like Tails except that she is more adorable compare to the little fox.

Once player is done with the main quest, they can actually jump into the mini-game. The mini-game plays like the main game except that it is one level only and it challenge player to finish as fast as possible. Nothing much to comment really since this is just like a quick game to the stage that you have cleared.

Graphic

This game was made for gameboy advance and it is starting to show its age. However, it is still very pretty and all animation was ported smoothly without a problem. Furthomore the game runs very smoothly even when the characters are running at top speed. A lot of the character’s sprites where ported properly and with various zones included, this is a very beautiful game to admirer.

Sound

Sonic games always have the best music. The 80’s techno is still alive in the game and every zone has its own theme. Some of the themes is so good that you really do enjoy while playing the game. Sound like rings getting disperse after getting hit is also ported over into this game.

Conclusion

Anyone who played the 2D Sonic game will surely love this Flash version of Sonic, even when this is not SEGA’s official game. You got to give the author credit for uploading this free version to the Facebook Community. Bravo!

I give this a 4 out of 5 rating.
