Warstorm

I for one particular never did like playing card game. It is usually complicated and dull after a few minutes into the game. But after being convince by a friend of mine to join him into playing Warstorm. The game actually changes my view on how card game is like. In this review we from Mabel Games will take a look at Warstorm which is developed by Challenge Games.

Gameplay

Warstorm is a card game, plain and simple. It has rules and… well more rules. The game may look very complicated and unexciting at first, but after you give it a chance and play though it for a few minutes, you might actually like it.

The game provides players with a deck of cards which includes a hero in it. The cards will only work if the Hero leads your troops in a group called squad. The cards itself is really unique as it will provide players with attack, magical attack, special ability, heal and items.

When player first jump into the game, the tutorial will provide the basic information on how the game system should works. This is considered the longest tutorial I have ever seen in a game. It takes relatively over 1 hour to understand how the game works. Yes, it is that long. The tutorial will take you over to at least 20 battles before it is completed. Reason to the long tutorial is to explain to user how the game works and how certain card works.

Warstorm is considered a turn base strategy card game. This means that once you start the game, you will take turns to attack your opponents. Players will also be provided health and troops to assist in this battle. I do notice that once player jumps into a battle, everything is taken over by the system and player will only have to sit back, watched and pray that the hero and units you bring into battle will actually win you a victory. Player has no control whatsoever during the battle.

To win, player either kills off the opponents by draining off their health to zero or eliminate all the enemy cards. Player must bear in mind that this concept works the same way for your opponents. So it is advisable to bring in troops which need little cycle time to get into the battlefield as quick as possible, at least let your troops shield you since you only have limited health.

Planning is also a major part of the game as players need to study carefully what cards they need to bring into battle. There are cards that are only meant for offense, defense and special bonuses. Each card has its own advantage and disadvantage. Archers are weak against infantry units, but best suited for taking down air/flying units. Furthermore it is always advisable to bring in a healer into the battlefield as they can keep your troops alive long enough for them to do more damage.

Players can either obtain cards from other players via gift and sharing or they can always purchase new decks from the shops. Purchasing new decks of cards is randomized, so it is all up to your luck in what you will get. You might get a real low level troop to a rare dragon. Players may also get extra card by completing certain part of the quest provided.

Graphic

This is a card game, what more can I say about the graphic part? Well there are nice arts and I do mean nice. All the arts for the cards looks like it has been carefully drawn and scanned into the game. The interface itself is rather nice and well made for a card game.

Sound

War drums sounding in the background while playing the game. I would suggest just turn on your Itune unless you really like hearing the drum beating over and over again.

Conclusion

I do find it rather enjoyable since I rarely play card games. This is recommended for those who loves Magic the Gathering, but do not have time to leave the office or stuck somewhere your friends are not around and desperately need to play a card game.

I give this game 4 out of 5.
