The Company of Myself

This flash game titled The Company of Myself is developed by Eli Piilonen (Spewer) with artwork by Luka Marcetic and music by David Carney. At first I thought this is a game for work in office...due to the title is consisting of the word "company". But then, it is a bit confusing where the title says The Company of Myself.

The story starts with introduction and conversation of a hermit who is always alone and talks to himself. He has no friends and does not really enjoy the company of others, and therefore only has himself to rely on for everything he needs to do.

Wow, this is really a sad story of an introvert and being an introvert myself, I would actually kind of relate to this. However, while playing The Company of Myself, I feel I am very lucky person as I always have my closed ones including family and friends to talk and relate to, for which I feel that I am very blessed.

The gameplay is that you will play as this hermit that will try to get to the green door for every level. The door is for you to enter another room. Arrow keys will get you from place to place. Here are how the control keys function:

[Up] for jumping
[A] key for flipping switches.
[P] or [Esc] will pause your game
[R] will restart the current level

[Space] has two functions here. At first Space key functions as a key for you to enter the green door. Then as you progress through the next levels, this key will help you to clone yourself everytime you press the Space key. You can clone as many as you can and these clones will help you to jump on top of each other to get to the each green door exit.

Throughout the game, there are always the help and guidance from the hermit that talks to himself. So it feels like you are a part of him too, and you can only rely on your strategic thinking to get through this game. I can feel the loneliness of this guy who have nobody to talks to.

It also feels frustrating when you plummet down when you missed a step. Repeatitive restarting the current level will feel kind of annoying, not with anyone else, but with your ownself. Life alone in this world can be so tough. It reflects on the help that we can offer to each other can be precious when we actually reach out to the world.

Overall I do not actually like the ending but this is a unique game where you actually pay attention to the story that narates the game. As each of the naration helps in giving the tips on how this game works, serving as the sole companion that you need when you are with....yourself.
